Home air conditioning in Britain: what domestic air conditioning costs to install and to run, what home air conditioning UK quotes actually contain, why UK air conditioning is a refrigeration job rather than a boiler swap, what a home air conditioner has to be sized against, what air conditioning for homes UK needs from the building, and what an air conditioning near me search really turns up
Air conditioning arrived late in British houses and is arriving quickly now, and most of the confusion around it comes from one distinction. A machine you plug in and vent out of a window is an appliance. A fixed system with an outdoor unit, a pipe run and a commissioning certificate is building work, done by an engineer who is legally required to hold a refrigerant handling qualification. The two are priced differently, they perform differently, and only one of them needs a quote.

How air conditioning works
- Decide which rooms, and why they overheat. Most British houses have two or three rooms that are genuinely uncomfortable rather than a whole house that is. It is usually the loft conversion, the south facing bedroom and the glazed extension, and each of them overheats for a reason that is worth understanding before it is cooled, because shading or insulating can cut the load the equipment has to fight.
- Find the outdoor position before you choose equipment. The condenser has to stand somewhere with airflow around it, on a mounting that does not carry vibration into the structure, at a sensible distance from a neighbour's window, and where condensate can drain. That position and the pipe route to it decide the price far more than the badge on the box does, and on a flat or in a conservation area it may decide whether a split system is possible at all.
- Get the sizing calculated rather than assumed. Capacity comes from a heat gain calculation for that room: its volume, its glazing and orientation, what is above and below it, and who and what is inside it. An oversized unit short cycles, leaves the air damp and costs more to buy and to run, so a firm that quotes a size without asking those questions has guessed at the one number that decides whether the system works.
- Check the certification, then compare like with like. Anyone handling fluorinated refrigerant needs the relevant personal certification and their company needs its own. Once you have three certified firms on site, ask each for specified capacity, pipe run length, whether making good and the electrical certificate are included, and what the first service costs. Those answers turn three prices into three comparable descriptions of a job.

Common questions
- Is home air conditioning worth it in Britain?
- It depends on whether the system also heats. A reverse cycle unit works in the shoulder seasons as well as in a heatwave, so it earns its place across the year rather than for three weeks. A cooling only unit in a room that overheats briefly is a much narrower proposition.
- What is the difference between domestic air conditioning and a portable unit?
- A fixed system separates the hot half of the refrigeration circuit and puts it outside, so the heat genuinely leaves the building. A portable stands in the room, vents through a hose and pulls warm air back in around the window seal, which is why it works far less well than its rating suggests.
- Does UK air conditioning need planning permission?
- Sometimes. The indoor unit is inside the house; the outdoor unit is the part that touches planning, and householder permitted development covers some external plant subject to conditions on position, size and noise. Flats, listed buildings and conservation area elevations need checking first.
- Can the same system heat the house in winter?
- A reverse cycle system heats the rooms it serves, and in a single room it can be a cheaper source of heat than an electric panel heater because it moves heat rather than making it. It is not a replacement for a whole house wet heating system, and it should be sized for both duties if you want both.
- How long does a fitted system last?
- A well installed and regularly serviced split system is long lived, and what shortens its life is almost always the installation and the neglect rather than the age. Systems that were never commissioned properly or never serviced fail early, which is why the commissioning sheet and the service record matter.
