Fascia and soffit cleaning prices, and what the work actually removes

Cleaning the eaves is a genuine maintenance job and also one of the more loosely described services in the trade. The same van will quote gutter clearing, gutter washing, fascia washing and soffit washing under half a dozen names, and the prices are not comparable until you know which of those four is included. The distinction that matters most is between clearing a gutter out and cleaning its outside face.

Gutter and fascia cleaning: four jobs, often quoted as one

Clearing the inside of the gutter of moss and silt so it drains. Washing the outside face of the gutter. Washing the fascia board. Washing the soffit underneath. The first is functional maintenance and the other three are appearance. A cheap quote is often the first one only, and a higher quote that includes all four is not necessarily worse value, so ask which faces are being cleaned before comparing.

What fascia board cleaning can and cannot restore

Green algae, general grime and a season of road film come off readily and the boards look close to new. Oxidised and chalked plastic is a different matter: the surface itself has degraded, and washing removes the loose chalk without restoring the colour. Specialist restorers and solvent treatments exist for that, they are a separate service, and they will not rescue a board that has become brittle.

When a clean is hiding something

Staining that returns within weeks in the same place is usually a leaking gutter joint or a blocked outlet rather than dirt. Dark streaks below a particular bracket, moss growing on the fascia face, or a sagging gutter line all point at a fault that cleaning will not fix. Ask the cleaner to tell you what they saw from the top, because that observation is worth more than the wash.

Gutter soffit and fascia cleaning prices: why access drives them

Most domestic eaves cleaning is done from the ground with a telescopic pole and a vacuum or brush system, which is quick and avoids working at height. Where a pole cannot reach, or where a camera is needed to confirm the gutter is clear, the job needs a tower or a scaffold and costs more. Conservatory roofs, restricted rear access and three storey frontages are the usual reasons a quote comes back higher than expected.

Questions people ask about fascia and soffit cleaning

How often should gutter and soffit cleaning be done?

Once a year is the usual rule for gutters, and more often where there are overhanging trees, with autumn the natural time. The boards themselves are appearance rather than function, so that is a matter of how they look.

Will cleaning restore faded plastic fascias?

Washing removes dirt and loose chalk, and it will not bring back colour lost to ultraviolet degradation. Restoration treatments are a separate service with mixed results depending on how far the surface has gone.

Is pressure washing safe on fascias and soffits?

High pressure can drive water behind the boards, damage sealed joints and strip degraded plastic further. Most competent operators use low pressure with a brush and a detergent for this reason. Ask what method is being used, particularly on older boards.

Does gutter cleaning include the downpipes?

Not always, and a blocked downpipe is a common cause of an overflowing gutter that was just cleared. Ask whether downpipes and outlets are checked and cleared as part of the price.
