Epoxy flooring cost UK: what the job involves and who is registered to do it
Epoxy is the resin most British garage and workshop floors are coated in, because it is hard, chemically resistant and comparatively cheap. It is also the one with the clearest limits: it is brittle under impact next to polyurethane, it yellows in strong sunlight, and it does not like being laid on a damp slab or in the cold. Knowing where those limits sit is what turns a price into a decision.

How epoxy flooring cost uk works
- Check the temperature and the season. Epoxy cures slowly and poorly below a working temperature that most unheated British garages are under for a good part of the year. A quote in January should say how the space will be warmed, or say which season the work is for.
- Test the slab and specify the primer. Moisture is the main enemy. A slab with no membrane needs a moisture tolerant primer or a barrier coat, which is an extra line and a legitimate one.
- Match the system to the traffic. A domestic garage takes a car and dropped tools; a workshop takes a pallet truck. Impact resistance is where epoxy is weakest, and a polyurethane or a hybrid is sometimes the better answer at a similar price.
- Decide the finish. Plain, flake broadcast or quartz. Flake hides dirt and adds grip, plain is easiest to clean and shows every mark. This is the choice most owners change their mind about after the quote.
- Plan the downtime. Preparation is dusty and the floor must be empty; curing then takes days before vehicles return. For a working space that lost time is part of the real cost.

Common questions
- Is epoxy flooring cheaper than polyurethane?
- Usually, per square metre for a comparable thickness, and the difference is small next to the preparation. Where impact or temperature swings matter, paying for polyurethane is often the cheaper decision over the life of the floor.
- Will epoxy stick to my garage floor?
- If the slab is sound, dry and properly prepared, yes. If it is dusty, sealed, oily or damp, the answer depends entirely on what the preparation removes, which is why grinding is not optional.
- Does epoxy flooring yellow?
- Standard epoxy ambers in ultraviolet light, so a floor with strong daylight on it is usually finished with a polyurethane or polyaspartic topcoat. Ask what topcoat is included.
