A solar array has no moving parts, so maintenance is inspection rather than servicing. What a competent annual visit buys is early warning: a loose connector found before it arcs, a failed string spotted before it costs a season, a bird problem caught before the cables are chewed. What it does not buy is more output from a healthy system.
What real solar maintenance services include
A visual inspection of panels for cracks, delamination and hot spots; a check of mounting fixings and their weathering; inspection of the DC isolator, connectors and cable management for heat damage or UV degradation; an inverter check including its error log; string voltage and current readings compared against expected values; a look under the array for nesting; and a report comparing this year's generation with last. That report is the point of the visit, and an invoice without one is a visit that measured nothing.
Cleaning is worth less than it is sold for
British rain removes most soiling from a pitched array. Cleaning earns its cost where panels are shallow pitched or flat, where there is heavy pollen, farm dust, salt or industrial deposition, and where birds have been at it. It is close to worthless on a steep, clean domestic roof, and on any roof it is worth measuring the before and after generation rather than accepting a claim. Be wary of pressure washing and of anything abrasive: cleaning that scratches the glass or forces water into a junction box costs far more than the dirt did.
The two solar PV maintenance checks that pay for the visit
The electrical connections and the generation comparison. Connector and isolator faults are the common precursor to a real failure and are cheap to fix when found early. The year on year generation figure is what tells you whether anything is wrong at all, and it takes a competent person about ten minutes if the monitoring exists. If you buy nothing else, buy those two.
Warranties do not cover maintenance
Panel and inverter warranties cover defects, not wear, not bird damage, not soiling and generally not the cost of access. Workmanship warranties cover the installation, usually for a shorter period, and usually require that the system has been maintained. Read what your warranties require before deciding to skip inspection, because the cheapest maintenance regime can be the one that voids the expensive cover.
Questions people ask about solar panel maintenance cost
Do solar panels need annual servicing?
They do not need servicing in the mechanical sense, and an annual inspection is worth having because it catches electrical faults and bird problems early and confirms the array is still producing what it should. The report is the value, not the visit.
How much does solar panel servicing cost UK households?
It varies with roof access, array size and whether the visit includes cleaning and electrical testing. Ask what is included item by item, and insist that a generation comparison and an electrical inspection are in it, because those are the parts that find faults.
Is cleaning solar panels worth it?
Sometimes. On steep domestic roofs rain does most of the work. It is worth it on shallow or flat arrays, in dusty, agricultural, coastal or polluted locations, and after bird fouling. Ask for generation before and after if the claim is that it will pay for itself.
Does maintenance affect my warranty?
It can. Many workmanship and some product warranties require reasonable maintenance and evidence of it, so keeping inspection reports is part of protecting the cover you paid for.
